TUESDAY night's chill didn't affect a hot Nick Mooney, who fired an inspirational double to send Devizes through to the second round of FA Vase.

After Saturday's thrilling 4-4 draw forced this replay at Nursteed Road, right wing Mooney struck twice in a first half where the home side dominated the Screwfix First Division team.

Willand hit back in the second half through captain Danny Jee, and the visitors threw everyone forward for the final minutes, but Devizes managed to hold on for the win that earned them £700 prize money.

Devizes manager Mark Godley was full of praise for his players. He said: "Mooney was excellent tonight and he has had a terrific season. He has impressed me on and off the pitch.

"Every single player worked hard for their club tonight, I thought that we were superb in the first half. They raised their game after the break but we stopped them from creating many clear-cut chances."

Devizes went a goal ahead with the first attack of the game in the seventh minute. Willand cleared the high ball but it only went as far as Mooney who struck it from 25 yards past keeper Philip Bell.

Forward David Lloyd came close in the 17th minute after striker Dave Macey was shoved 25 yards out. Lloyd hit a great free kick around the wall but it sailed just over.

Jee created Willand's first chance in the 29th minute when he played a perfect through ball to striker Steve Ebdy, but his shot went over the cross bar.

On the 30 minute mark Devizes went two in front. The Willand box was full of players when midfielder Brad Newman hit a thunderbolt. It was deflected and dropped straight to Mooney, who banged the ball in from close range.

Two minutes after the break Devizes should have had a third. Mooney chased the ball down just inside the Willand half and dispossessed midfielder Neil Cane. Mooney ran the ball forward a few yards and played a delicate chip to Macey who was on the edge of the box. As the keeper advanced the striker hit a chip of his own only to see it bounce off the wrong side of the post.

But fortune favoured the home side on 55 minutes. Ebdy made a run into the box and went down from a challenge by Andy Coombes but referee Graham Scott waved play on.

Willand almost equalised thanks to a great individual effort from Cane. He picked the ball up in his own half and ran forward, unleashing a venomous shot from 35 yards out, but keeper Andy King blocked it.

The visitors picked the pace up as they searched for a goal. They came agonisingly close in the 75th minute when defender Ian Patchett cut a cross back to Ebdy who was positioned on the edge of the box. He hit the ball first time but the powerful strike was straight at King.

Willand managed to claw a goal back with three minutes remaining. Winger Liam Raybould crossed the ball in to a box that contained almost every player on the pitch. It came to skipper Jee who volleyed it at goal. The rebound came straight back to Jee and he made no mistake on his second attempt.

Raybould missed a golden chance very late on, only managing to get a glancing blow on a free header.

Devizes are away to Frome in the next round on November 20. They also play them away this Saturday in the Screwfix Premier.
