15779/1GAZETTE & HERALD: HIT and run victim Simon Sproule is out of hospital and recovering at home after a quad bike mowed him down.

The 30-year-old dad was taken to Bath's Royal United Hospital with a fractured neck and skull, where he spent a week lying on his back unable to move.

He was hit by the vehicle on Priory Street, Corsham, outside the Three Brewers Pub on March 22.

Mr Sproule returned home last Thursday and said the last thing he remembers of the night is chasing after a quad bike he had bought for his daughter after someone stole it.

"It's all a blur. I don't know what happened in between. I just remember waking up in hospital," he said.

He had spent the evening at his home in Charles Street when he saw someone speeding off on the 125cc quad bike, which is worth £1,000.

He had only just bought it that day as an Easter present for his 12-year-old daughter Sophie.

"I was apparently found in the road with my head down and no shoes on," he said. It's quite frightening not knowing.

"I planned to restrict the speed on the quad bike but I hadn't done it so I don't know how fast he was going."

Mr Sproule, who is currently unemployed, said he now only hears a ringing sound in his left ear. He is also yet to discover whether he will lose sight completely in his left eye.

He wouldn't let Sophie see him after the accident and said: "My daughter has been worried about me but I don't want her to see me in this state," he said. "I'm not a pretty sight. I've got a job to walk at the moment."

Now Mr Sproule has to have regular check-ups and more tests at the hospital to find out if his injuries could affect him in the future.

He said: "My left eye is swollen but the consultant said it might be more serious than just bruising."

The keen biker, who has enjoyed a two-wheeled hobby since he was a child, said a bone in his back is twisted and it's very difficult to get up and down.

His mother Marilyn Sproule, 61, who was supposed to be holidaying at a family apartment in Spain, has stayed in Corsham to help her son.

Police found Mr Sproule conscious in the middle of the road with blood on his head and hands. Priory Street was closed while investigations were carried out.

PC Robert Eccelston of Corsham traffic department he would like to hear from anyone with any information and can be contacted on (01249) 712172.
