DAVID Gilroy hailed his late winner against Halesowen on Saturday as one of the most important goals he has ever scored.

His lob over goalkeeper Chris Taylor in the dying minutes gave Chippenham their 21st win of the season and helped pile the pressure on title rivals Histon, who lost 2-1 at home to Rugby.

The Bluebirds are now four points clear of the second-placed outfit, although the contenders still have a game in hand.

It means the title race is back in Chippenham's hands as they still have to travel to Histon on the final day of the season.

The 21-year-old said: "It was a big goal for us and we desperately needed it.

"We would have felt hard done by if it had finished 1-1."

Gilroy praised the referee as the man in black played an advantage after a foul on fellow striker James Constable.

He added: "The ref played a great advantage and I went through and lobbed it over the keeper."

The importance of the goal showed on the face of Gilroy as he ran to the crowd shouting in excitement.

"It was extremely pleasing to score the goal especially as it was so late in the game."

He feels it was vital to come away with the win on Saturday after a disappointing Easter Holiday programme that saw them lose two games on the bounce.

"It was a great result after last week. It gave all the lads a lift and we are now up beat again.

"We are now back within a shout of the title and Histon still have Bedford to play.

"We lost two games and now they have lost two games in a row. It has been a case of swings and roundabouts.

"There is still a lot of football to be played and we have to concentrate on capitalising on this good weekend."
