STEVE WHITE COLUMN: OUR kit man Clive Garraway might have been our secret weapon on Tuesday night when we beat Swindon Town 6-4 to win the Wiltshire Premier Shield.

Clive was a bit worried that some of the lads, who had come straight from work to the match, would be hungry so he brought along dozens of bananas and Jaffa Cakes to keep them going.

It must have done the trick because at half-time when we were 3-0 down things were not looking too good.

Of course it might have been something we said to them at half time.

I told them they needed to show what they could do as the young Swindon lads were giving them a hard time and they were giving them far too much space.

Of course the Swindon youngsters had probably come straight from some light training or the massage table, whereas many of my team had been at work all day plastering walls or the such like.

It took them until about 8.30pm to wake up. I was delighted with the way we fought back and it was wonderful the way the crowd stayed behind the team even when we were loosing badly.

We fought back wonderfully after half-time and it was a really thrilling match. We were asleep when we let in their fourth goal but Alan Reeves is a very experienced pro.

I was a bit surprised that Swindon didn't have any subs on their bench and it was a shame they lost a couple of players but I think we would have won anyway. I understand Iffy and Ian Woan had expected to be able to play but were then told they couldn't.

The match really turned around when Gilroy came on. We told him to push up on their very young right back and it worked.

It was a great night for Chippenham fans and all the club. It is people like Clive who work in the background that show what the club is all about. He is a great bloke. I am also really pleased that our physio Paul Watts has decided to stay with us for next season.

I think his wife helped persuade him. She knew he would be walking around the house with a long face if he wasn't involved with the team.

Last week was all a bit frustrating trying to get Lee Smith signed from Gloucester but I think it was a blessing in disguise that he did not come.

It says something about him that having shook hands on the deal and letting our secretary travel to meet the Gloucester City secretary he couldn't even be bothered to turn up.

The spirits in the club are very high. On Tuesday evening I was getting more information about the Histon game than I was about ours.

The fact they only drew 3-3 with Bedford is good news but we have to worry about our match at Aylesbury United on Saturday.

Gary Thorne is setting an excellent example to the rest of the team. He is my captain and he is vital to our success.

He had a great game on Saturday and really listened to what I had to say about defending too deep against Bath City and a couple of the earlier matches.

I have known Gary a long time and he is a really good bloke and excellent for the team. He is a fantastic header of the ball.

The only reason he was on the bench on Tuesday was that along with a couple of others he has a lot of bookings. I didn't want to risk him picking up another and ending up with him suspended for any important matches at the end of the season.

It was the same with Mcentegart and Herring. I put Herring on but I told him in no uncertain terms what would happen if he got himself booked.

Now we have to concentrate on three precious points at Aylesbury on Saturday.
