Marlborough Town Football Club are celebrating their centenary on Saturday at their Elcot Road ground, kicking off at 12.30pm.

Former players and anyone who used to be connected with the club will be made most welcome at the clubhouse where old photographs, memorabilia and club trophies will be on display.

A junior football match will kick-off at 2.30pm followed by a Veterans v Present XI match.

Chairman of the Wiltshire FA Richard Gardner, together with secretary Mike Benson, will make a presentation to the club at 6pm.

Club president Dennis Cripps said: "We are hoping that our eldest member, 96-year-old Dick Milsom, will be able to make it.

"Dick was a member before the war and helped get the club going again when the war was over."

Cripps has been connected with the club since 1963 when he made his debut as a player and he added: "I suppose you could say I have occupied most positions on the committee over the years except treasurer.

"I look upon myself as a sort of caretaker, and when it's your turn to bow out you hand it over to someone else to look after."

The clubhouse was built by members of the club and volunteers back in the 1980's and now the club's aim is to raise funds to install floodlights.

From 1887 to 1904 there were no records of the club although it was apparent that teams belonging to Marlborough did play on the common.

Despite demand for the football club it wasn't until July 5, 1904 when a team was officially formed.

To date Marlborough Town continues to flourish with two sides in the Wiltshire league, managed by Pete Ward, Kevin Jackson and Chris Simmons and also nine youth sides.

"It's a great day in the history of the club and we are all very proud. It will be nice to meet new and old members of the club and it should be smashing day," added Cripps.
