IN the Evening Advertiser, April 22, it is suggested that the results of placing of mobile cameras on the motorway bridges has resulted in a reduction in motorists speeding.

Whoopee would we have expected the police and the partnership to have said anything else? Of course not it is obvious that if the threat of being caught speeding is increased so the number of people who speed will decrease.

The great pity is that Supt Rowland is unable to apply this very simple principle to other areas.

If he did we would see crime fall in Swindon. So next time he is challenged to put officers on the streets of Swindon, where the very presence of a uniform might deter some act of wanton vandalism or criminal behaviour, I trust he will not hide behind the very negative we have limited resources excuse and divert some of the officers used to apprehend speeding motorists.

After all, to paraphrase his own words: "It appears that the only way burglars, vandals and drunks will get the message that such behaviour is unacceptable is when there is a risk they will be caught."
