I was quite frightened last week to discover from the letters page and the article on page two how many people, who no doubt regard themselves to be reasonable citizens, appear to consider that it is a God given right for us to be able to race down motorways, and probably other roads, at speeds well in excess of the permitted speed limit.

These people seem to have lost all respect for our road traffic laws and the lives of innocent people which those laws are designed to help protect. Drink driving and excessive speed have been proved to be factors which cause many of our road accidents which can result in loss of life, serious injuries and family grief.

We applaud the police for all of their efforts to clear our roads of dangerous drink drivers and we should now give them the support and the respect which they and our laws deserve when they legitimately take action to enforce our speed limits in order to save even more deaths and the resultant personal tragedies.

To those who still believe that speed cameras are no more than methods of raising additional taxation perhaps should be reminded that if it is a tax it is purely a voluntary tax which nobody is compelled to pay. All they need do to escape it is to comply with and respect the law by reducing their speed.
