EDUCATION bosses will submit a £1m funding bid to build a new building for children at two merging primary schools.

Lowbourne Primary and St Michael's Junior schools will merge to become The Manor Church of England Primary School in September, operating under one headteacher on the two sites.

Wiltshire County Council hope a new 11-class school can be built where all the children can be educated together on the St Michael's site.

Under the plans the existing school buildings would all be demolished, except the neighbourhood nursery and the specialist learning centre.

The Lowbourne Junior school site would be sold on the open market.

The council will put in a bid for £1m funding from the DfES by the end of next month.

William Snow, Wiltshire County Council cabinet portfolio holder for educations, said: "The reason for going to the St Michael's site is because they have already got a neighbourhood nursery there."

There are other back-up options being looked at by the council in case funding is not granted, including moving all the children to the Lowbourne Junior site and building three new classrooms there.
