A NEW bridge over the Thames and Severn Canal by the Cotswold Water Park will be opened by the former England cricketer Jack Russell tomorrow.
The building of the Spine Road Bridge will enable cyclists and walkers to safely use the towpath below, leading to the water park.
Animal tunnels incorporated into the design will also allow local wildlife to cross.
Andrew Stumpf, British Waterways regeneration programme manager, said: "Spine Road Bridge is a very real and tangible example of one of the many benefits that canal restoration can bring in this instance significantly enhancing visits to the Cotswold Water Park by walkers and cyclists.
"There is much public support for the Cotswold Canals restoration and it is fantastic to have completed a project which benefits local communities and the local ecology, while helping to bring more visitors into the area for local businesses."
Last summer the restoration of the Cotswold Canals was boosted by an £11.3 million grant towards the first major phase of their restoration.
Bruce Hall, chairman of the Cotswold Canals Trust, said: "Much important conservation work has been achieved by our volunteers and supporters over the years and we are really pleased to be able to play our part in this important step towards the restoration of these beautiful rural waterways."
Jack Russell played 54 times for England, and now concentrates on his career as an artist.
