Prince Charles is to visit Malmesbury Abbey for a fundraising classical concert on May 22.

His Royal Highness will be entertained by internationally acclaimed Russian violinist Sergey Krylov and the London Chamber Orchestra.

The concert is one of three which will be held over two days to raise money for the refurbishment of St Aldhelm’s Chapel and the housing of a 15th century Bible in the Abbey as well as new facilities in the tower at St John the Baptist Church, Little Somerford.

Helping organise the event is the charity Music in Country Churches whose patron is Prince Charles.

On Friday May 21 the King’s Consort perform Purcell, Vivaldi and Handel at 7.30pm with the soprano Lorna Anderson.

On Saturday May 22 at 11am the violinist Sergey Krylov performs unaccompanied Bach and Paganini and then on Saturday at 7.30pm the London Chamber Orchestra, with Krylov, perform Mozart and Haydn in the presence of His Royal Highness.

Abbey vicar Neill Archer, who was an international opera singer before being ordained, is looking forward to welcoming his royal guest.

He said: “‘We’re absolutely delighted to host these outstanding concerts.

“They are going to feature music of real beauty and truly wonderful performers that are likely to draw a wide audience from across the country.

“I also feel that’s its really good for Malmesbury that the Prince of Wales has made time in a hectic schedule to spend some time in the town and support both the creative arts and our ancient buildings.

“Alongside this we’re working in partnership with Tim Gilson, Head Teacher at Malmesbury School, and Jeff Staton, Head Teacher at Malmesbury Primary, to bring music students from the schools to the Saturday night concert.

“Young people will also be able to attend the Saturday morning concert with their parents for the price of a programme.”

Tickets for the concerts range from £5 to £50 and are available by calling 01603 628319.
