Friends have raised more than £800 in support of teenager Jay Ryles-Jenkins, who fell into a coma just minutes after a rugby game last March.

Kate Douglas and Rosie Pike, of Sheldon School, and Hardenhuish headgirl Hannah Allies organised the band night to raise money for adaptations to the 17-year-old’s home in Silbury Close, Chippenham.

It is hoped that, with a downstairs bedroom, wet room and medical equipment room and a wheelchair, Jay will be able to leave hospital, where he remains almost a year after he sustained the brain injury.

Hannah Allies said: “The night was lovely and I think everyone had a good time.

“We sold out of tickets by the Wednesday so there must have been around 170 people there, which is amazing.

“We just wanted to do something to support Jay.”

Friend Jarid Clark sang his own song about Jay and The Silhouette Showgirls were among the performers at the band night at Chippenham Rugby Club.

Hannah said: “Jarid’s song got such a good response that he sung it again at the end. He knows him quite well so it was lovely.”

Jay’s teachers at Sheldon School, including the head Gerard MacMahon, turned out to support the fundraiser.

Hannah said: “There were loads of people there and everyone was so generous when we passed the collection buckets around.”

As some people missed out on tickets, a similar event may be organised in April.

Jay’s mother, Sue Jenkins, was unable to attend but thanked everyone involved.
