A group of Second World War military re-enactors have raised more than £2,800 for Help for Heroes and the Wiltshire Air Ambulance from a six-mile sponsored march in full uniform.

Members of the Screaming Eagles Living History Group together with members of the First Allied Airborne Association marched from Aldbourne, where the Screaming Eagles were based in the war, to Littlecote House.

Spokesman for the Screaming Eagles Living History Group Bruce Steggles said: “We marched six miles across country in the pouring rain using a route marched by the original Band of Brothers back in 1943/44.

“The route started on the Aldbourne village green and went to Littlecote via the village of Ramsbury where we stopped for a break and a short talk by local historian Roger Day.”

The Band of Brothers were part of the 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment attached to the 101st Airborne and were stationed at all the places the re-enactment march, in October, took in.

Mr Steggles said: “We wanted to retrace their history by walking in their footsteps whilst raising some money for two charities that do a lot for our freedom and security.”

Group members were back in uniform again when the proceeds of the march were ceremoniously presented on The Green in Aldbourne. Just over £750 went to the Air Ambulance and £1,857 to Help for Heroes.

The two groups are planning to do the march again in October.
