Almost 1,200 pupils at Sheldon School took part in a run on Friday to raise money for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance who helped save the life of their fellow student Jay Ryles-Jenkins.

The pupils managed to raise more than £2,200 which will be split between the air ambulance and former Sheldon pupil Amy Lambert who is setting up her own African orphanage.

Jay, 16, remains in a stable condition in the Brain Injury Recovery Centre at Frenchay Hospital.

Assistant head teacher Michael Seely said: "Everything went extremely well and I think the pupils were touched as they were running for a friend.

"A number of them had printed off photographs of Jay and attached them to their backs.

"We were very worried when we had the torrential rain first thing but it soon cleared up and we were able to carry on with the event."

Jay's mum Sue Jenkins has thanked everyone at the school who took part and organised the event.

She said: "It was such a lovely thing to do and me and my family are very touched that the school decided to do this.

"The air ambulance deserve the full support of the community because they do such a good job.

"Jay is getting stronger all the time and I know he will be so touched by this."
