Builder David Sett has vowed never to go out in Chippenham again after he was savagely attacked by a group of youths wielding baseball bats, cricket bats and planks of wood.

Mr Sett, 29, was walking back to his home in Bradbury Close, at 1.30am on Sunday after a night out with some friends when he was approached by eight teenagers who were brandishing the weapons.

One of them shouted ‘get him’ and before Mr Sett had a chance to get away one of the teenagers had smashed him over the head with a bat before the others started hitting him with bats and pieces of wood.

Luckily, Mr Sett managed to run to a friend’s house nearby but shortly after his friend let him in, the gang threw something through the window causing it to shatter before they started hammering at the door.

Paramedics and police were called and Mr Sett was taken straight to the Royal United Hospital in Bath where he was kept in overnight for observation due to the head injury and severe bruising to his arm.

He said: “I just couldn’t believe that this was happening – it was so unreal.

“It was scary as I was on my own and these lads had bats and planks of wood out ready to hit me.

“A good friend of mine was attacked in a similar way in the town just a week ago and it is frightening.

“It seems these groups are just out for a fight and that is all they want.

“I won’t go out in Chippenham any more – I was not really happy about it before but now there is no way.

“I would urge everyone not to walk home alone as this could happen to anyone.”

The attack on Mr Sett came during a weekend of violence in Chippenham.

In separate incidents a doorman had his ear bitten and a policewoman was attacked.

The woman police officer was set upon by four men and a woman in the Karma nightclub just before 2am on Saturday.

Shortly after midnight, a 40-year-old local man was arrested after biting the ear of a bouncer at Club E11even when he was thrown out of the venue.

On Saturday night a large slab of Bath stone was hurled through the windscreen of an empty police van parked outside The Brunel pub on New Road shortly before 4am.

The group of teenagers who attacked Mr Sett are described as aged between 18 and 20, some wearing hooded tops.

The car they were seen to get away in was a silver Ford Focus which screeched away from Lysley Close.

Anyone with information on this attack is urged to contact Chippenham Police.
