A LARGE part of Devizes Castle went on sale yesterday at a guide price of £2.5 million.

The present owner, Jonathan Lewis, is selling the main section and the north tower of the 1830s castellated mansion built on the site of the Norman castle.

Mr Lewis is devastated to be selling the building he fell in love with at first sight.

He told the Gazette: “I was looking to move in London in 2004 but happened to see an advert in Country Life for the castle, and just couldn’t believe it possible to buy something that amazing and beautiful.

“I went and viewed it – the central part – and fell in love with it. I planned to use it as a place for weekends and holidays.

“However, I then bought the North Tower and moved in full time, as I was predominantly working from home.

“I recently became the chief executive of a hologram company, requiring much more time in London, and my fiancee, Abigail White, is also based full time in London, so sadly we are having to sell because we are not able to spend enough time here.”

The purchase of both parts cost Mr Lewis £1.7million and he has spent another £300,000 on creating a seven-bedroom, six-reception-room home.

Miss White said: “We’ve had some great parties at the castle and it’s the most wonderful place for Christmas, but it has just become too frustrating not being able to spend enough time here.”

A castle has existed on the site since 1086 when a wooden motte-and-bailey citadel was built there. The first stone castle was built by the Bishop of Salisbury in about 1120.
