With the impending demise of Woolworth’s, there will soon be a large black hole in most town centres, including that of Chippenham.
Many local folk have expressed the hope that another large and competitive supermarket will come to Chippenham and Tesco, which has taken over the old Somerfield store in Emery Gate, has hinted that it would like a much bigger presence in the town.
With the large Woolworth’s store being only a stone’s throw away from their Emery Gate store, the acquisition of the Woolworth site by Tesco would give that company the opportunity to substantially expand their operation in Chippenham almost immediately and at a low cost.
It would provide them with a prime high street site from which they could sell their huge range of non-food items and give them much more shelf space in their existing store for an expanded range of food.
Such a move could have huge benefits for everyone – Tesco, the town centre of Chippenham, other retailers, local shoppers and perhaps the saving of a greenfield site on which Tesco might have built a local store at some time in the future. How about it Tesco?
