I found your article on the damage to the pub sign, belonging to the Swan at Enford, most distressing. I belong to a group known as the Inn Sign Society and we are only too well aware of how rare signs of this type are.

They are known as gallows signs, and as the Enford sign is at least 250 years old, it is quite possible that it could be the only one in the whole of Wiltshire.

What a shame that the way things are nowadays, it seems that the Swan’s licensee may be liable, through little or no fault of his own, to be responsible for some considerable costs.

Should it be possible for your newspaper to start a fund, in support of Mr Jackson, I will be pleased to make a contribution.
