The outcome of today's meeting of Wiltshire Police Authority where the future of the police helicopter and Wiltshire Air Ambulance was discussed will not be known until next week.

The authority met in private session to discuss renewing the contract on the combined helicopter but no details on what was discussed has been released.

Kieran Kilgallen, chief executive of the police authority, said: "The helicopter was discussed and members noted the progress being made. A full statement will be released early next week."

The Gazette believes that discussions are continuing with the Great Western Ambulance Service and the provider of the helicopter, Police Aviation Services, about the details of a proposed contract.

The existing contract expires this month and following a petition by the Gazette to keep the combined helicopter/air ambulance, GWAS is now understood to be willing to sign up for a five year term as the police want.

Earlier in the year GWAS had said it was only prepared to sign up for one or two years.

The Gazette petition was signed by almost 20,000 people.
