Animal lover Kerry Flynn from Calne has been awarded with a national fundraising award by a pet welfare charity.

The year seven pupil at John Bentley School was crowned National Young Fundraiser of the Year by the PDSA for raising more than £600 for injured animals.

Kerry won the award through the Pet Protectors points scheme that runs from September until August. The Young Fundraiser of the Year is the member who has raised the most money in that time.

Kerry, 11, said: “I decided to join PDSA’s Pet Protectors club because I really love animals and wanted to know more about PDSA and the pets they care for.

“I have a hamster called Daisy who I adore and decided to raise funds for PDSA so the vets and nurses could treat pets like Daisy.

“I think the PDSA is a great charity and I am very pleased to raise money for sick pets.”

Kerry raised £615 by organising a variety of fundraising events, including several car boot sales, a raffle and a large sale at school.

Points are awarded for fundraising, for example 150 points for getting a whole class to join Pet Protectors, and only fundraisers who reach 10,000 points are eligible for the award.

Headteacher Gordon Trafford said: “We are very proud of Kerry and I have presented her with a certificate and a school badge in recognition of her hard work in raising funds for the PDSA.”

Kerry was invited to the PDSA animal hospital in Bristol for a prizegiving ceremony and a VIP tour on Tuesday last week.

Young PDSA executive Vicki Craighill said: “We are incredibly proud of her.”
