Fire crews from Corsham and Chippenham were called to a chip pan fire in a flat in Corsham Road, Lacock on Saturday night.
Peter Freegard, 31, a partially sighted man had to be treated for smoke inhalation after trying to save his cat from the kitchen fire.
Mr Freegard and his mother, Mary, who lives with him as his full-time carer, had left the flat by the time fire crews arrived and was being treated by paramedics at the scene.
The man is thought to have been making a meal on his cooker at around 8pm when he left it unattended and the blaze started.
Fire station manager Martin Hancock said: “The fire had been contained to the kitchen.
“The man had no injuries from the fire although he was checked over for smoke inhalation by paramedics.”
The mother and son were moved to The White Hart Hotel in Calne by North Wiltshire District Housing while Westlea Housing assesses the damage.
Westlea Housing spokesman Nick Taylor said: “Work to the property should be completed next week.
