THE Wharf Theatre in Devizes is gearing up for a packed autumn season.
October will see a range of different events, including a foreign film screening, a play exploring the first women performing in English theatre, and a performance of Verdi’s opera La Traviata.
The season kicks off on Thursday, October 1, at 7.30pm with the Devizes Film Club presenting Fremont, an award-winning foreign-language film.
The film has received international praise for its storytelling and emotional depth.
The following week, from October 8 to October 10, at 7.30pm each night, the focus shifts to the 17th century with Playhouse Creatures.
The play, written by April De Angelis, explores the lives of the first women to perform professionally in English theatre.
The production is brought to life by the local group 3rdThird Theatre, and blends wit, historical insight and humour.
On October 18, at 8pm, Shakespeare Live presents Shakespeare’s Green-Eyed Monster, a collection of scenes delving into the playwright’s most gripping explorations of envy.
The scenes will be performed by a local company known for their clarity and energy.
Hambledon Productions will bring their professional touring show The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town to Devizes on October 23, at 7.30pm.
The stage adaptation, inspired by Spike Milligan and Ronnie Barker’s iconic sketch, promises sharp satire and a romp through Victorian London.
The month concludes with White Horse Opera’s return from October 27 to October 31, with La Traviata.
The opera, performed by a talented amateur cast from across Wiltshire, will feature soaring melodies and sumptuous costumes.
A matinee performance will be held at 2.30pm on Saturday, October 31.
In November, before the Wharf transforms for its magical Christmas production of Peter Pan, Don Quixote (is a very big book) by Opposable Thumb Productions will be presented.
The play, fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe, offers a retelling of Cervantes’ epic with imagination and comic brilliance.
