One of the great privileges of being an MP is getting out from behind the desk and hearing directly from the people I represent.
That was exactly the purpose of my summer tour, which took me to more than 25 towns and villages across my constituency of Melksham and Devizes.
From Winsley, Westwood and Holt in the west, through Bradford on Avon and Melksham, to Devizes, Potterne, Urchfont and Market Lavington in the east, I had hundreds of conversations with local people.
And while every community is different, some very clear themes emerged.
Access to healthcare remains a huge concern.
Whether it is the difficulty of getting an NHS dentist, travelling long distances for appointments or the need to bring more services back to local communities, people want to know that local services will keep pace with a growing population.
That is something I will continue pushing hard on.
My campaign for more services at Melksham Hospital and to make better use of Devizes Health Centre remains a major priority, and I will keep working with NHS leaders to turn warm words into practical improvements.
I also heard repeatedly about the importance of protecting the things that make our communities special.
In Bradford on Avon, it was good to meet firefighters from the station which has been saved from closure.
Elsewhere, residents raised planning, housing, flooding, public transport and the pressures facing our villages as they grow.
Some of the most rewarding conversations were with people I have already been able to help through my constituency office.
Casework can sometimes be an unseen part of an MP’s job, but helping someone navigate a difficult situation – and hopefully making life a little easier – is enormously important to me.
However, the biggest lesson from the tour was a simple one.
People want to be listened to.
You do not have to agree with me on everything.
In fact, some of the most useful conversations I have are with people who do not.
My job is to represent the whole constituency and to understand the different experiences of the people who live here.
After a busy summer, I have returned to Westminster with a notebook full of conversations, concerns and ideas from across our area.
Those conversations matter.
They help decide the questions I ask, the issues I raise with ministers and the campaigns I pursue locally.
So thank you to everyone who stopped for a chat over the summer.
I intend to keep listening.
