Search the Public Notice PortalResidents are excited about plans to build a new supermarket in a Wiltshire town.
Aldi recently submitted its plans for a new store and drive-through coffee shop at The Bike School site on the A361 London Road in Devizes, after unveiling the proposal in January.
A public consultation on the application will run until April 9 and at the end of the first week of this consultation no objections had been lodged with the council.
Cllr Philip Whitehead, for Urchfont and Bishops Cannings, has requested that the plans be discussed by a council planning committee if the officer recommends turning them down.
Multiple residents have already submitted comments to the council in support of the development.
They argued that a new supermarket would provide them with more choice and competition.
Neil Marshall said: “Granting this application would provide residents of the area with a high quality food shopping option.
“Aldi consistently wins taste test comparisons and, whilst it is a budget supermarket, the quality of product matches or exceeds that of other supermarkets in Devizes.
“This would provide welcome choice and competition. I would use this supermarket on a regular basis and would like to see the application granted.”
Aldi has said that the £10 million investment in the town would create 40 jobs and this was another factor in some locals backing the scheme.
Josh Gabb added: “I feel Aldi will really support the town and will really help the town, and don’t feel it would build congestion as it’s just off the dual carriageway and wouldn’t slow the flow of traffic up.
“It would help with shortages of jobs. Also, Aldi is really good value of products with their prices, supporting cost of living.”

A supporting statement was submitted under the comments section of the application by Matthew Cadman.
He argued the development would improve an “underutilised” part of town.
He said: “I strongly support the proposal to develop a new Aldi food store, drive-through unit, and EV charging hub on the currently underutilised site on the edge of Devizes.
“This development represents a major investment of more than £10 million in the town and will bring clear economic, social, and environmental benefits to Devizes and the wider Wiltshire area.”
Residents can continue to have their say on the plans until the consultation ends.
Wiltshire Council is expected to make a decision by June.
