Residents are continuing to battle against plans for a self-storage facility in a “peaceful suburb.”

Last year Cinch Self Storage submitted plans to knock down the old Vauxhall garage on the A4 Bath Road in Chippenham and build a three-storey storage facility on the site.

These plans proved highly controversial, and attracted criticism from residents and councillors, and were eventually withdrawn by the applicant.

In April, Cinch Self Storage returned with a proposal for a much smaller building that will not exceed the width of the existing one.

The view from the front will be screened by mature trees while new trees and a hedge will be planted at the back.

But some who live in the residential streets that sit behind the planned facility have objected to the plans over fears of noise pollution.

“My back garden backs onto this site, this should not be allowed to happen.

“There are plenty of empty units all around the Chippenham area, especially around junction 17 where the unit is already built, with no effect on people’s home life.

“The site should have houses on it, (that’s) what you expect to see on a housing estate, not self-storage units. I strongly object to this application, this shouldn't be allowed to happen.”

Teresa Bayford added: “I am concerned about the impact of new noise that will be generated by a storage facility being present in a residential Area.

“This could represent a major change to the noise pollution levels of the immediate neighbourhood and as a result could have a major effect on the lives of the residents of adjacent houses.

“The previous Honda and the Vauxhall garage(s) did not generate any significant noise and therefore the surrounding residents have lived in a peaceful, quiet suburb for more than 20 years.”

Cinch self-storage insisted the number of trips to the site would be low and a noise impact assessment found the development was unlikely to “result in adverse impacts” for neighbours.

A design and access statement said: “Self-storage facilities are lightly trafficked as goods and materials tend to be stored on-site for extended periods of time.

“As such, the level of vehicle trips to and from the site would be low and not of a level that would affect the operation of the local road network, particularly when considered in comparison to the current site use.”
