Devizes parking crackdown plans revealed by council

Last summer Devizes Town Council requested the Local Highways and Footpath Improvement Group implement additional parking restrictions on New Park Road.

Wiltshire Council has now launched a consultation on a proposal to extend the double yellow lines already in place at the junction with Victoria Road.

Cars often park on the road causing congestion and leaving little space for those driving across the Quakers Walk Bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Last June, a report prepared by town council officers claimed the issue was “worsening”.

Cars parked in New Park Road, Devizes (Image: Newsquest) Wiltshire Council’s plans will see the current ‘no waiting at any time’ restrictions on the eastern side of the road extended north by 72 metres, alongside additional double yellow lines on the western side.

A 25-metre area of the western side of the road would allow parking with a limit of two hours.

A statement of reasons for the planned restrictions said: “For the purpose of relieving or preventing congestion.

“The proposed restrictions were requested by the town council and local members in response to requests received by their constituents.

“In the main to prevent obstruction, physical or to visibility caused by inappropriate parking and to change existing restrictions to suit the current environment.”
