Residents in Wiltshire have launched a petition to change their speed limits after drivers were found doing 90mph through a small town.
Just weeks ago, Marlborough Town Council confirmed that it would be extending the 40mph speed limit on the A4 after 18 years of campaigning.
Now residents believe it’s not enough, as a new petition has been launched to also lower the limit of Salisbury Road to 20mph.
Currently, the 20mph speed limit on London Road ends when it reaches the roundabout joining Salisbury Road.
The petition which will run until September 28 could see the 20mph limit extended from the George Lane/London Road roundabout up to the Jennings Road/Blenheim Road roundabout as well as a speed camera installed along that stretch.
Although petitions are discussed and considered by relevant councillors regardless of how many signatures they receive, only petitions with 4700 signatures or more will be debated in front of the full council.
“This is a particularly busy stretch of road, with significant traffic of all types, including big lorries,” the petition reads.
“It is also a regular crossing point for school children, both primary and secondary, as well as park users and their dogs.
“Traffic regularly accelerates to high speeds between the roundabouts, presenting an unnecessary risk to pedestrians of all types.
“A 20mph limit would reduce the risk to pedestrians and would make no difference to road users, and a camera would ensure that the limit is understood and enforced.”
Recent data downloaded from speed monitors at George Lane, which joins onto Salisbury Road, suggests that speeding is a clear problem in the town as one driver was caught reaching 93mph in a 30mph zone.
This is also not the first time calls have come to reduce the speed limit on Salisbury Road.
In September 2023, Marlborough Town Council proposed to reduce the limit on the A4, George Lane, Herd Street, Salisbury Road and Pewsey Road to 20mph.
But the plans were met with mixed opinions, as resident Ashley de Safrin labelled it "an awful idea".
"It takes forever to drive anywhere these days, and further limits make driving even less palatable," she said.
The Salisbury Road e-petition for slower speeds and an enforcement camera can be found on the Wilshire Council website.
