A driver clocked travelling at 49mph through a tourist hotspot was one of dozens caught speeding by police.

Officers from Wiltshire Police conducted speed checks at multiple locations throughout the county during the week of Monday, May 20.

On Wednesday, May 22, officers from the Marlborough Neighbourhood Policing Team visited the village of Avebury, which is likely to see increased visitors during the bank holiday weekend.

In just one hour, between 1.20pm and 2.20pm, 15 drivers were caught speeding on the 30mph road through the village, with the fastest vehicle recorded at 49mph.

All 15 motorists have been issued with intended notices of prosecution for their “excessive” speed.

Out of the offenders, 10 will be offered a speed awareness course, depending on previous convictions and history, while the remaining five will face a £100 fine and three points.

On the same day, police visited two locations in Rowde to conduct similar speed checks.

In total eight vehicles were clocked speeding, with the fastest driver doing 39mph on a 30mph road.

Depending on previous convictions and history, all eight of these drivers will be offered a speed awareness course.
