A woman in her early 20s has died after being struck by a train at Trowbridge railway station on Wednesday (March 20) evening.

Trains were halted and the lines closed following the serious incident just after 6pm.

The Wiltshire and Swindon Coroner’s Office will be informed.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: “A person was struck by a train at Trowbridge at 18.07 hours and the lines were closed.”

The incident is being handled by the British Transport Police who will be asked to investigate the circumstances of the woman's death.

It is said to have happened on the Westbury line close to the station ticket office and lines were closed in both directions until just after 8pm.

A BTP spokesperson said: “British Transport Police received a report shortly after 6pm yesterday (20 March) to a casualty on the tracks near Trowbridge station.

“Paramedics also attended, however, sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not thought to be suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

All lines between Bristol Temple Meads and Westbury were closed to allow the emergency services to deal with the incident.

Train services running through stations at Westbury, Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Avoncliff, Freshford and beyond were cancelled or delayed.

The station car parks were closed and buses laid on to transport passengers between stations. Taxis were also seen ferrying passengers.

A GWR spokesperson said: "Due to the emergency service dealing with an incident at Trowbridge Railway Station, train services between Bristol to Westbury, Swindon to Westbury will be heavily delayed or cancelled.

"Customers travelling between Westbury and Bristol Temple Meads:
Limited road transport is operating; please speak with station staff at Westbury.

"Alternatively, customers for Bristol can travel to Taunton where connections are available. This is likely to add an extra hour to journey times.

"Customers can also make use of local buses, where GWR tickets are being accepted.

"If you arrive at your destination 15 or more minutes late because your GWR train was delayed or cancelled, you can claim Delay Repay compensation. Please keep your ticket and visit GWR.com/DelayRepay"

Later, GWR announced that the lines had been reopened.

A GWR spokesperson added: "Following the emergency services dealing with an incident between Bristol Temple Meads and Westbury, all lines are now open.

"Train services running through these stations are now running normally. Please check your journey at http://gwr.com/check."
