Police arrested four young people after receiving a report about a robbery near a supermarket in Chippenham.

Officers responded to a call alleging that two people had been robbed near the Aldi on Foundry Lane at around 8.10pm on Thursday evening.

The witnesses passed descriptions of the suspects to the officers, who then carried out swift searches of the area and, within 27 minutes of the 999 call, arrested four people who had fled from the scene on foot in different directions.

Two 15-year-old girls were arrested on suspicion of theft and robbery and have since been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.

A 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of robbery and remain in custody at Gablecross Police Station for questioning.

Insp Pete Foster said: “This was excellent work by officers who responded extremely quickly to the initial report and carried out extensive foot chases and searches in the initial area to swiftly make four arrests.

“Incidents of this nature are rare in Chippenham but I hope our response provides reassurance to local residents.

“Enquiries will continue. We would urge anyone with information, including anybody who was in the Foundry Lane or Langley Park area between 7.30pm and 8.20pm, to get in touch."
