A coroner has said it is unclear how a woman came to drown in her bath, an inquest has heard.

Amelia Eleanor Orum Samphire, a 75-year-old who lived in Broken Cross, Calne, was pronounced dead shortly after 2pm on December 19, 2022.

Emergency services were called to the scene after Amelia’s body was discovered by her son Michael.

He had forced entry into the property after he had called and texted his mother with no response.

Paramedics confirmed the pensioner, originally from Glasgow, had been submerged for around 90 minutes before being found.

At an inquest on Tuesday, January 16, Area Coroner Ian Singleton recorded submersion as the medical cause of Amelia’s death.

Coroner Singleton added that it could not be determined how she came to be submerged, but emphasised there was no evidence she intended to take her own life.

He said: “It remains unclear, based on the evidence, how it was that she came to be under the water.”

After examining the scene police confirmed that there were no signs of a disturbance and no evidence of suspicious circumstances surrounding Amelia’s death.

Her husband of 42 years, Colin, was staying in Portsmouth and last spoke to Amelia over the phone when she said she was feeling “a bit rough.”
