A town centre bar will close for good on Christmas Day after the venue was put on the market.

The Snuffbox in the heart of Devizes is currently being marketed, with the 999-year lease on the venue up for sale for the price of £175,000.

Bar owner Dave confirmed on Facebook that he would be leaving the hospitality industry due to 'a number of personal reasons', with The Snuffbox set to close its doors for the final time on Christmas Day.

Reflecting on his journey since opening the bar in 2019, Dave praised his staff for helping the venue to become a “resounding success” during the last four years.

He said: “After opening in late 2019, nobody could have predicted the next few years that we all would end up going through.

“Despite this, The Snuffbox has been a resounding success and I can't thank you all enough for all your support over turbulent times.

“I'd especially like to thank all of the staff that have ever stepped behind the bar and poured a pint, without your help, none of it would have been possible.

“I have been incredibly lucky to have met a whole bunch of wonderful people and have made some friends for life here.”

The future of the building in Snuff Street now remains uncertain and in an online listing Huw Thomas Commercial claimed the retail unit has potential for a “variety of uses.”

But Dave hopes that whoever takes on the premises will continue running it as a bar.

He added: “My sincere hopes are that someone will take on the property to continue running it as a bar. There's still great potential here and Devizes deserves a dedicated craft beer bar.

“And so, until then I hope to see you all over the next week or so to say thank you personally and share a drink with you.

“Devizes, it's been a pleasure.”

Regulars will be sure to miss the bar, which was listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for the first time this year.

Inspectors praised the independent venue for the popularity of its real ciders and nine keg and membrane beers.

Dozens of residents voiced their sadness at the announcement on social media with one local claiming the bar would be “sorely missed.”

The Snuffbox will open between 11am and 1pm on Christmas Day as customers join staff for an annual Christmas drink for the final time.
