A busy Wiltshire A-road is set to shut “urgently” to motorists while roadworks are carried out.

The A4 London Road will close from the White Hart Hotel in Calne for 1200 metres in a south easterly direction, stretching just past Stockley Lane, on Wednesday, December 6.

This closure will be in place for two nights while Wiltshire Council carries out road marking alternations and other associated works on the major route.

The road will be shut between 7pm and midnight on both Wednesday and Thursday night, during which time motorists will be forced to seek alternative routes.

Drivers have been advised to use the designated diversion route taking them via the A4 and the A3102 towards Royal Wootton Bassett before looping back round to the unaffected side of the A4 using the B4005 and the A4361.

While the works are expected to be completed within two nights, the closure notice will have a maximum duration of five days.

Both the closure and diversion route will be clearly indicated by traffic signs during the works, while Calne Town Council warned residents of the “urgent” scheme on their social media channels.
