Parts of Wiltshire that are near the River Avon and its tributaries have been warned by the Met Office to prepare for possible flooding.

Areas such as Malmesbury and Chippenham have particularly been named as places at risk and the flood alert also stretches over Royal Wootton Bassett and Calne.

These areas have been known to flood before, as Royal Wootton Bassett was briefly turned into “an island” by floods only last week.

However, a stretch near the M4 close to Dauntsey Lock is expected to be the worst hit, where flooding is not only 'possible' but 'expected'.

This could cause traffic chaos if the motorway were to flood.

According to the Met Office alert issued at 7.57pm on Saturday, October 28, 2023, locals should “monitor local water levels and weather conditions” throughout the day, particularly if you live near a river.

A spokesperson for the Met Office has also warned to “avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding. Start acting on your flood plan if you have one.”
