A Wiltshire fly-tipper claimed they dumped waste at a local beauty spot due to its “unpleasant smell” after missing their bin collection.

The Bromham resident was slapped with a £400 fixed penalty notice after admitting to illegally tipping household waste in a layby off the A361, between Devizes and Calstone.

The mess, which consisted of household waste, was left near to renowned local beauty spot Morgan’s Hill.

Council enforcement officers spotted the fly-tip in August and found evidence within the rubbish which led back to the resident and their spouse.

During a formal interview, the individual confessed to depositing the waste after missing their domestic waste collection and failing to get to the household recycling centre in Devizes on time.

They told officers the smell of the waste in the car was so unpleasant that they fly-tipped it rather than taking it home.

Another fixed penalty notice was handed out to a man from Durrington after a witness spotted carpet underlay being thrown from a van off Milston Road in February.

The witness took pictures of the incident which helped officers trace the driver.

Meanwhile a man from Collingbourne Ducis was fined £400 for leaving waste on military land near Everleigh.

A Bristol resident has also been fined after waste associated with them was left at Whitehill Lane in Royal Wootton Bassett this January.

They had paid a waste collector to remove the rubbish but did not have information which led to a positive identification, meaning they were deemed responsible.

“This should be a reminder to Wiltshire residents to be extra vigilant when paying someone to take their waste away.

“Some people who advertise waste collections on social media are unlicensed to remove waste, and people should always check for a waste carriers’ licence and take down the vehicle details of anyone who takes away their waste – or they could be fined if the waste is dumped.

“One of our business plan commitments is to reduce fly-tipping in Wiltshire, and that’s why we have invested more money into covert cameras and officers to catch fly-tippers in the act, as part of our zero-tolerance approach.”
