St Peter’s Church is expected to be closed for all of October.
The Marlborough High Street church is a 15th-century building with extensive Victorian restoration from the 19th century.
However, historic buildings like this one don’t stay so beautiful without a lot of work.
The Trust of St Peter’s in Marlborough have issued a statement to the public stating that the church will close in October due to workers uncovering “a greater degree of damp than expected” while upgrading the fire alarm.
This damp is particularly located in the church’s kitchen area, which is used daily for the church’s Cardinal Coffee Shop.
“The temporary closure is due to essential work upgrading and maintaining the building under our guardianship," The Trust explained.
“We are working hard to reopen the Cardinal Coffee Shop as soon as the kitchen work is completed.”
Unlike most churches, St Peter’s no longer used as a religious institution, but instead the building hosts community events and a popular cafe.
All profits from the Cardinal Café go towards supporting the work of St Peter’s Trust, and so the temporary loss will be a huge blow to fundraising this October.
However, Amanda Marsh from Macmillan Coffee Mornings has confirmed the gift fair and coffee morning scheduled to take place in the church on Saturday, September 30, will still be going ahead.
"Apparently we can still use the kitchen for teas and coffees," she said.
