An 11-year-old saved his choking grandfather using CPR - after learning about it in school.

Maxi Bastable leaped into action when his granddad Francis got a Murray mint lodged in his throat.

He had been trained in what to do in an emergency during a Wiltshire Air Ambulance visit to his school, Westonbirt Prep, near Tetbury.

These lifesaving skills allowed him to dislodge the sweet that his grandfather was choking on.

Shortly after the incident, aspiring doctor Maxi was invited to visit the Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Airbase in Semington, near Trowbridge, to meet the aircrew along with his mum Joanna, dad James and his older brother Ted.

Joanna said: “We’re very proud of Maxi for coming to his grandfather’s rescue and we will be forever grateful to Wiltshire Air Ambulance and its Emergency Awareness Training programme.''

Wiltshire Air Ambulance emergency awareness training instructor Andrew Robinson said: “This is exactly why the charity began the programme four years ago and we have so far delivered the training to more than 20,000 children.

“It’s brilliant to hear that Maxi was able to take what he was taught by Wiltshire Air Ambulance in school and put it into practice when the need was there.”
