Residents lined the streets as an “exciting” carnival parade made its way through the centre of a Wiltshire town.

The annual Devizes Carnival was held in the centre of Devizes, with the parade departing from The Green, on Saturday, September 2.

Huge crowds watched as 30 entrants made their way along the route, which ended on Sidmouth Street, in a variety of colourful costumes.

The theme of this year’s carnival was the environment and attendees were urged to consider the materials they used for their flags, masks, costumes and sculptures.

Annabel Lake, an assistant director at organisers DOCA, felt this year’s carnival marked the start of building the event back up after the difficulties of the pandemic.

She said: “We tried to make it as easy as possible for people to be involved and this year we had lots of lovely entries which made it exciting.

“We feel positive, we’re starting to build it up after some difficult years and will be even stronger next year.”

Entrants were judged by a panel including a local youth judge.

Ahead of the event DOCA worked with artists from across the town to help facilitate a week’s worth of free workshops based at the Wharf Theatre.

These workshops provided people with the support and materials to design and build their floats and costumes.
