A well-used footbridge in Wiltshire remains shut to the public after closing for several days while fire damage is repaired.

The Blue Bridge between Monkton Park and Baydon Lane in Chippenham, which provides passage for pedestrians over the River Avon, was damaged by a vehicle fire earlier this year.

In March emergency services were called to reports of a motorbike on fire on the bridge and the incident caused visible damage.

The path remained open to members of the public for several months despite the damage, but has now closed while repairs are finally carried out.

In a notice online, Wiltshire Council confirmed the fire damaged decking boards would be lifted off the bridge and replaced, with works beginning on Tuesday, August 29.

The bridge is due to reopen on Friday, September 1, at 6pm when works are completed, according to the council’s roadworks map.

But these plans may be subject to delays, with a sign at the scene warning the closure will last a full week before finally reopening on Tuesday, September 5.

Pedestrians will be forced to seek alternative routes across the river in the meantime.
