Bomb disposal units were called to a Wiltshire forest after a Beaver group discovered what appeared to be an artillery shell.

Just after 6pm on Monday, July 3, Graham Bryant had been leading a group of around 14 Savernake Forest Beavers through the woods, headed towards the King of Limbs oak tree near St Katharine’s Church, when they made the shocking discovery.

“We were on a popular path that a lot of people use when my son Alex spotted it”, he said.

“Another parent sent a photo to his friend in the army, and he told us to ‘steer clear of it’, so we reported it to the police.

“It was slightly unusual to find munitions, maybe not for this area, but you usually find them on Salisbury Plain rather than Savernake Forest.”

Bomb disposal units were spotted at the site the next day, while a helicopter also landed near the Ailesbury Column.

“I thought nothing would come of it but clearly it was something they took very seriously and dealt with”, Mr Bryant added.

It has not yet been confirmed what action the bomb disposal team took.

Wiltshire Police have been contacted for comment.
