The deadline for commenting on plans to boost Chippenham’s town centre is less than a week away.

The consultation on the Chippenham One Plan closes at 5pm on Tuesday, June 6.

Under the new scheme the 1960s gate and weir on the River Avon could be replaced, a new river park is in the pipeline, historic buildings in the town would be refurbished and there are promised improvements to open spaces.

There has been some controversy around the proposals.

Plans to turn a town centre park into a plaza suitable for hosting events all year round have been criticised for taking away green space.

The whole scheme has previously been labelled ‘undemocratic’ by councillors who said that there were not enough local councillors involved in making the consultation document.

MP for Chippenham Michelle Donelan has called for people to make their voices heard through the consultation.

She said: "It is really important that you have a voice in shaping the future of our town. By giving us your feedback, we can make a community-led plan which will enable us to reshape our town centre with a coordinated approach.

“Please do pop to my office or the Town Hall to pick up a copy of the survey, which will enable you to have a voice in how we shape the town for future generations."

The consultation survey can be completed online here.

If anyone requires help completing the survey or would like the consultation material provided as a paper copy or in a different format, please contact Customer Services on 0300 456 0100.

Hard copies of the survey are also available from The Rt Hon Michelle Donelan MP’s office, Wiltshire Council’s Monkton Park office reception, Chippenham Town Council reception, Chippenham Library, Chippenham Community Eco Hub and The Olympiad.

Once completed the survey can be handed in at the above reception areas or posted to Major Projects, Wiltshire Council, Bythesea Road, Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

Leader of Wiltshire Council Richard Clewer commented: “With only a week left, time is running out for people to express their views.

“So, we would strongly encourage anyone who has ideas on how the town centre should look in the future to read the consultation material and the complete the form. “We want our town centres to be vibrant and sustainable in the future and now’s the opportunity for people to say whether the Chippenham One Plan contains the right concepts and schemes for Chippenham.”
