Attackers hit their victim in the face with a glass bottle in a brutal assault near a High Street pub in Wiltshire.
Three men and one woman approached a man in his 20s outside The Flying Monk in Chippenham at around 7.20pm on Friday, May 12.
They told him to empty his pockets and, when he refused, struck him with a bottle and punched him repeatedly in the head.
The group also used the victim's own motorcycle helmet to inflict further injuries.
A member of the public gave first aid at the scene and the victim was then taken to hospital for treatment.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.
A spokesman said: "Enquiries are ongoing and officers are obtaining CCTV from the local area as part of their investigation.
"We are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident who may be able to assist with our enquiries.
