Rail services between Westbury and Swindon suffered massive disruption after a vehicle collided with a railway bridge on the edge of Trowbridge.

The vehicle hit the railway bridge at Yarnbrook earlier this afternoon, causing delays to services and cancellations while Network Rail engineers checked for damage.

In a message to commuters, Great Western Railway said commuters faced delays to services between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham.

It also led to services between Westbury and Bristol Temple Meads being cancelled.

Later, GWR added: “Following a road vehicle colliding with a bridge between Westbury and Trowbridge all lines have now reopened. Disruption is expected until 18:30 (18/04).

“Train services between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham may be delayed. We're sorry for the delay to your journey.

“We will update this message with more information when we have it.
