Police have issued a warning after a member of the public brought home from a beach what could have been an unexploded bomb.
The person, who lives in Salisbury, travelled all the way home before realising that it could have been an unexploded ordnance.
On this occasion, it turned out to be a piece of metal.
Wiltshire Police has now urged people not to poke around items if they are found, but to call 999 immediately.
Posting on the Salisbury Police Facebook page, PC Joshua Pankhurst said: “Unexploded ordnance can be found anywhere, and they can range in size from a bullet to air-dropped bombs weighing hundreds of pounds.
“These can all cause serious injury and loss of life.
“Please, if you do find something, don’t be tempted to poke it around to try to identify it.
“Leave it alone and report it to us immediately on 999. A false alarm is better than an explosion.”
