Police have issued a warning to youths spotted climbing the roof of a Wiltshire supermarket.

Two young people were pictured on the roof of Phelps Parade and Iceland in Calne after gaining access.

Police say the issue has been reported to them multiple times over the Easter holidays and have warned a “tragedy” could occur if children do not understand the risks involved with scaling the roof.

PCSO Mark Cook, of the Calne policing team, said: “Unfortunately, in the past few weeks, we have seen this issue return with youths again also attempting to access the higher adjoining pitched roofs putting themselves at even greater risk.

“This sort of behaviour is unacceptable and could result in a tragedy if one of these youths were to slip and fall.

“We are urging parents and guardians to speak with their children regarding the risks they are placing themselves in whilst gaining access to this area. Your words may prevent a tragedy.”

PCSO Cook added that Wiltshire Council, who own and manage Phelps Parade, will soon be implementing measures to prevent youths from accessing the roof.

In the meantime, police will patrol the area.

PCSO Cook added: “We are patrolling this area as a preventive measure. Calne CCTV and local residents have also been advised to report any persons seen on the roof.”
