A pair of nurses who worked through the pandemic have started their own clinic in Devizes.

Cathryn Sommerville and Sarah MacKinnon both worked as nurses in hot clinics during lockdown, looking after patients with Covid-19.

It was there that they recognised the need for clinics specialising in ear care, and were inspired to start their own business called Deafenders Ear Care.

The duo have now set up shop in Coate, just outside of Devizes, and will be seeing patients from April 18 after registering with the CQC.

Mrs Sommerville said: “Earwax removal is no longer funded on the NHS or offered in GP surgeries so patients are out on a limb and have to sort it privately.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

“We worked throughout the pandemic and noticed so many people couldn’t understand us because of earwax they couldn’t get removed.

“We thought we just need to do something to help these people, so we trained to fill the gap in the market and set up on our own.

“We’re nurses so at the end of the day we want to help people. It might sound mundane but the satisfaction of making a difference to them hearing again is brilliant.”

Eardefenders will be open on weekdays and will also offer home visits for those that require them.
