Tributes have been paid to a much-loved Devizes vicar, who has died at the age of 86.

Father Brian Tigwell had served as the vicar of St Peter’s Church, on Bath Road, for almost 15 years between 1985, when he first moved to Devizes, and 1999.

Following his retirement he remained in Devizes and lived in the town with his late wife Mary, who died three years ago, for almost four decades.

Father Tigwell also served as Rural Dean of the Devizes Deanery of Churches for six years and frequently taught Religious Education lessons at the neighbouring St Peter’s Primary School, which has now closed.

He died on Sunday, March 5.

His grandson, George Reeves, remembered Brian and Mary Tigwell as well-known and much loved figures in the local community.

He said: “When I was growing up they couldn’t leave the house without bumping into someone they knew.

“Devizes is the kind of place where everybody knows everybody and they were very fond of the town, and I think a lot of people held them in very high esteem.

“My grandad always used to say, ‘I’m a people’s person’ and for him engaging with people in the town was the most important thing.

“You couldn’t go to the pub or anywhere in town without him stopping to speak to people, he made an impact on people.”

Mary Tigwell was also an important figure in the town before her death, serving as the librarian at Devizes School for many years.

Mr Reeves added: “They were a popular and colourful pair in the community, and I am sure that there are many locally who will remember them fondly and want to pay their respects.”

Mr Reeves has now followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and is training to become a priest himself.

He said: “They were really like a second set of parents for me, and I used to stay with them and go on holidays with them.

“Now I’m training to become a priest so I’m taking on the family business in a way. For me personally he was an incredible role model, mentor and supporter.”

Those wishing to pay their respects can do so at Father Tigwell’s funeral, which will be held at St John’s Church in Devizes at 11.30am on Tuesday, March 21, followed by a wake at The Bear Hotel.

Prior to the service, a procession will take place along Bath Road and will head up past St Peter’s Church before heading into town for the service.
