STAFF at a hostel for the homeless in Chippenham were shocked to discover a man’s body in one of the rooms on Monday (January 16).

Police and other emergency services were called to Alabare’s Unity House hostel in Wood Lane following the early evening discovery.

A private ambulance arrived later in the evening at around 9.30pm to remove the man’s body from his room.

The Salisbury-based charity provides support and accommodation for 15 people aged 16 plus, some of whom have underlying physical and mental health conditions, and drug and alcohol dependency issues.

Lisa Thomas, of Alabare, said they currently have 21 residents, including six who have been given accommodation under the extreme weather protocol.

Wiltshire Police said the man’s death was not being treated as suspicious.

An Alabare spokesperson in Salisbury said: “We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of our resident who sadly died on Monday.

“We strive to offer the best quality of care to each of our clients which includes regularly checking the welfare of each resident as well as supporting them to access other health and welfare organisations to meet their individual needs.

“Many of those who find themselves homeless have underlying health conditions and complex challenges.”
