A fire engine responding to a serious crash in Wiltshire also ended up in bother when it left the road and crashed into a telegraph pole while attending the scene.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed the unfortunate incident took place when multiple emergency services rushed to a serious crash on the B3089 in Berwick St Leonard at 5.50pm on Monday evening.

Two vehicles had hit each other, with one of them flipping onto its side. Wiltshire Air Ambulance attended and provided treatment but was not needed to take anyone to the hospital.

However, one woman was taken to the hospital via land ambulance with what Wiltshire Police said were 'serious injuries'.

This crash came as temperatures in the county dropped and many motorists found themselves coming across dangerous black ice, although it has not yet been confirmed how much this played a part in this incident.

DWFRS area manager Seth Why said: "Monday night firefighters were responding to a road traffic collision on the B3089 when unfortunately the fire engine left the road.

"Thankfully all our firefighters were uninjured and there were no other vehicles involved.

"Firefighters were able to deal with the road traffic collision they were mobilised to.

"We continue to remind the public of the dangerous road conditions we are currently experiencing, please avoid making any unnecessary journeys."

Wiltshire Police initially announced the incident as one of two serious ones they had attended on Monday evening in a Facebook post warning people about the treacherous conditions caused by ice.

The police's initial statement said: "Officers were called by the ambulance service to the B3089 in Berwick St Leonard at 5.50pm following a collision involving two vehicles. One of the vehicles had flipped on to its side.

"The air ambulance attended the scene and a woman has been taken to hospital in a serious condition. The road is currently closed."

Wiltshire Air Ambulance also confirmed its attendance, with the following statement.

"Wiltshire Air Ambulance was called to a road traffic collision in Salisbury at 17:42 on Monday, January 16. We attended in our helicopter, with our critical care paramedic and critical care doctor assisting on scene."

In an update on the crash victim's condition provided on Wednesday, a police spokesperson said: "The woman was taken to hospital and has since been transferred to Southampton Hospital. Injuries are believed to be serious.

"The road reopened at 3am."
