FOR decades the hospital in the grounds of Burderop Park at Wroughton was part of local people's lives.
In the dark days of the Second World War the estate, once owned by the Calley family, became a military camp and it was the first in the country to host American soldiers.
The site also became home to the 7505th USAF field hospital, treating American personnel and their families stationed in the UK until 1965 when the military left - offering to leave their medical equipment to the NHS.
It operated as a local hospital for another quarter of a century before eventually being shut down in 1990.
Former staff of the field hospital keep memories of their time in Wiltshire alive in a 7505th USAF Facebook group, fondly recalling British TV of the 1960s, marriages to Swindon girls and local landmarks.
Buildings on the site were demolished in 1992 and a data centre was built. Now that is being replaced with a much bigger complex that will be used by Amazon.
