ANGRY mourners have labelled civic dignitaries in Chippenham an “utter disgrace” after they turned up late for the National Moment of Reflection in memory of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Residents were “warmly welcomed” to join Chippenham Mayor Cllr Liz Alstrom and town councillors at The Buttercross at 8pm on Sunday to join the nation in observing one minute’s silence.

The event was organised as part of the National Moment of Reflection to mourn the passing of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and reflect on her life and legacy.

But Richard Cox, of Monkton Park, said: “We wanted to join the minute silence for the Queen last night. Residents were offered to meet at the market cross and 'ensure you arrive before 7.50pm'.

“A hundred plus arrived on time. Sadly, the town council and other civic dignitaries arrived at 7.57pm. England fell silent at 8pm. Chippenham at 8.05pm. Feeling disappointed.”

Mr Cox was not the only one to complain. Sally Allsworth added: “I agree, it was disappointing, especially after you heard the bells of St Paul’s ring at 8pm. The Buttercross still didn’t fall silent until 8.05pm.

Another resident commented: “It was an utter disgrace. They had two things to do: arrive on time and to be quiet at 8pm. Neither of which they managed.

“When they did arrive, they insisted on making their speeches and ignored the one-minute silence at 8pm.”

In a message on the town council’s website, residents were told to arrive "no later than 7:50pm, as to ensure a smooth and respectful service".

The message added: “We ask that no candles or naked flames are brought along to the service, to ensure a safe occasion for all.

“During her address, the Mayor will provide an opportunity for those in attendance to light an electronic torch, such as a phone light, or a battery-powered candle.”

Reacting to the events of Sunday, Sheila Fidler said: “Unfortunately, society has no respect these days. Disgraceful.”

Sue Cain added: “Sheila, sorry only certain members of society in this case.”

Another resident said: “I wasn’t there, but it sounds pretty poor. Not saying it will put it right but it might show the councillors that they’ve done something wrong. They might be blissfully unaware.

“Indeed, it’s possible they have valid excuses for being late but I can’t think of one for not holding off their speeches until after 8.01pm.”

And Geoffrey Davis added: “Shows [a] lack of respect, a total disgrace. People like this should be sacked.”

Chippenham mayor, Cllr Alstrom, said: “I haven’t seen the comments. I will have to look into this.”
